Opportunity to Make A Difference

Wanderers have learned of a truly unique organization that engages the homeless to participate in running.

From the Back On My Feet website: Back on My Feet is a non-profit organization that promotes the self-sufficiency of Philadelphia's homeless population by engaging them in running as a means to build confidence, strength and self-esteem.

The members of the newly formed non-profit, Back on My Feet, have collectively run more than 250 miles since they started the program on July 2, 2007. In less than one month, these men are already running 3.5 miles three times a week.

"I'm proud of myself. I haven't been proud of myself in a long time and it feels good," said Sean Bennett, resident of the Sunday Breakfast Rescue Mission and Back on My Feet Member

Back on My Feet's mission is to promote the self-sufficiency of Philadelphia's homeless population by engaging them in running as a means to build confidence, strength and self-esteem. The program teaches members about discipline, respect and goal-setting to help each one of them get back on track to a productive, fulfilling life.

"These guys are amazing," said Wylie Belasik, Outreach Director for Back on My Feet. "No one complains. In fact, at the end of the run there is at least one guy asking if we can do another mile."

All members of Back on My Feet are required to be enrolled in a long-term recovery program within a rescue mission or homeless shelter and to sign a "dedication contract." Upon admission into the program, members receive new shoes and clothes as well as physicals to ensure the safety of their health.

The program accurately tracks the miles run by each individual on a progress chart and runners are rewarded when they reach certain mileage goals. The members themselves help choose the incentives, which include trips to get ice cream, gift certificates, movie passes and tickets to sporting events.

"Running is such a beautiful metaphor for life," said Anne Mahlum, Founder and Executive Director of Back on My Feet.

"Life is about choosing different roads and our program teaches the importance of choosing roads filled with opportunity, hope and happiness."

The Wanderers are in full support of this organization and would like to encourage runners to help out in any way they can. Check out backonmyfeet.org to learn how you can help out including donating new or used clothing and shoes, becoming a lead runner, donations, and so on.
