Wineglass Marathon in Corning, NY

Just north of the town of Horseheads and some 50 miles from a billboard advertising a “Ho Mart” sits the quaint town of Corning, NY, home of hot glass and the world’s smallest race expo.

On September 30, five Wanderers and a husband arrived in Crystal City for a day of eating, fake glass blowing, and 23 seconds of race packet pick-up. Sixteen hours, three pounds of candy corn, and a magnum of wine later, Susan Hurrey, Farah Marasigan, Karen Tani, Megan Boyle, and Monica Ranly drove 26.2 miles to Bath, NY only to travel right back to where they started on foot.

Fortunately, their return trip coincided with the 25th Annual Wineglass Marathon, a flat and fast stroll through the New York countryside. All marathon finishers received home grown glass medals, unless their name was Monica Ranly who scored a big fat bottle of wine, a big fat check, and a big fat engraved frame for finishing second female overall with a time of 3:07:25, or Karen Tani who brought home the prize for 3rd place in her age group with a time of 3:27:30.  Megan Boyle ushered in the 32nd anniversary of her birth with a 3:58:54 finish.  Farah Marasigan scooted across the finish in 4:12:41 and Susan Hurrey closed the deal on her first marathon in years with a 4:21:03 finish after taking top honors in the 1st Annual Wanderers Complainathon

Special mention goes to Andrew Nelson, husband of Farah for chauffeuring the Wanderers strike force over all get out and providing glorious course support.
