Michele Tulino led the stampede of Wissahickon Wanderer runners at the Al Gordon 15k run in New York’s Central Park on February 16. Michele finished 80th among all the women entered in a blistering time of 1 hour and 12 minutes.

More than 2,000 runners competed in the race which is named in honor of Wanderer’s coach Al Gordon, who was the official starter of the race.

The Wanderers entered a strong squad in this year’s competition, consisting of Janet and Scott Quitel, Duncan MacGuigan, Wet Hen, Rock Steady and Beast of Burden. The race also marked the return to action for running legend Sam Campbell, who was competing in his first race as a Wanderer.

In addition to posting some very impressive times, the Wanderers also ambushed another running legend Don Roberts of New York out on the course. Rock Steady finished in a time of 1 hour and 17 minutes. Bunched together at 1 hour and 26 minutes were Wet Hen and Janet Quitel. Scott finished in an hour and 30 minutes with Duncan completing the two-loop course in an hour and 35 minutes. Since Beast of Burden did not register, no time was recorded for her, but whatever her finishing time, it was an impressive performance. Sam Campbell put down the golf clubs long enough to complete one loop of the course but turned up missing in action on the second loop after his calves started tightening up.

"My legs feel fine now, and I am now going out to buy a pair of running shoes," reported Campy later in the week. "Count me in for Cape Breton."

Campy’s experience, which includes several three-hour marathons albeit many years ago, should come in handy on the tough Cape Breton course in the Cabot Trail Relay in late May.
